Urban Ministry

As one of the outreach programs, the Triad Hindu Temple has been involved with the Greensboro Urban Ministry. In 1995 a group of volunteers decided that we would like to do something to give back to the city of Greensboro. We connected with the Greensboro Urban Ministry dinner service program for the homeless at the Weaver house.

Since then volunteers from our Temple have been diligently involved in cooking dinners four times a year at the UM’s community kitchen. Positive feedback from the satisfied diners keeps us going back.

It not only helps the many homeless who have walked through the dining room, but has given the volunteers the chance for camaraderie while giving back, has given many of our high school students over the years an opportunity to get community hours for their service projects, has given many sponsors solace from feeding the homeless.

This effort has been recognized by the State and HSNC has received the NC award for outstanding Volunteer service. The Temple leadership recognizes the time and effort of all the wonderful Volunteers!

The Hindu Society has been given four days in the year (the fourth Wednesday in March, June, September and December) plus additional days based on interest/need to prepare and serve dinner for the homeless at the Urban Ministry's Potter House at the intersection of Lee and Eugene.

Each dinner is sponsored by a member of the community who with the help of the coordinator puts together a menu and buys the groceries. A team of enthusiastic volunteers of all ages, join in two shifts to prep, cook, serve and clean up after dinner. Sponsors and volunteers in the past have expressed a feeling of satisfaction of having given to the community and the sense of camaraderie they have experienced working with a group.

If you are willing to co-sponsor this or a future dinner, or help volunteer to cook/serve, please contact us at gsotriadhindutemple@gmail.com

Note: This activity has been paused since COVID. We are working to resume it.
